Artist statement
Fashion has many different reflections. It can make a person feel connected to a brand or a specific group just by the design. It allows a person to express their mood, lifestyle and personal appeal without having to say a word. Fashion is something that can be simplified or pushed past the limits of a minds creation and turned into much more than just a pair of pants and a shirt.
The endless options of creativity that are available through the manipulation of a garment is what has always drawn me to become a designer. I get restless with daily routines and I’m always looking for new ways to keep my mind occupied. This industry is perfect because every day is different every garment, season, colour, texture and fabric is unique. Every day I can learn something new and I can apply that to my art.
The idea of taking something we all have and wear every day and turning it into art excites me. I am able to take the crazy ideas I have in my head and express them through something tangible. As a designer and an artist I find the need to touch everything, feeling for textures and being surprised when something doesn’t feel like how it looks. I’m intrigued of how far I can push or pull the boundaries of something whether it be how big I can make a skirt and how much can I defy gravity with fabric that is supposed to fall with gravity. I’m a perfectionist in the aspect of if something’s end result isn’t EXACTLY how I see it in my mind I usually don’t like it at all and this is something I find challenging every time I have a new Idea. I think this bittersweet quality of mine is what will push me through my career and keep me persevering to flourish in this industry.
